Introduction
In the HVAC industry, sound is generated by some form of vibration from the equipment. For example, the rotating equipment, the air and fluid movement through ducts and pipes. Therefore, the best way to reduce noise is by reducing the vibration produced by the equipment. System design that neglects to properly address vibration may results in malfunctioning components, noise and in some cases, catastrophic failure as pointed by Bradley N. Rohloff at Harley Ellis Devereaux. Thus provides insights on how sound, noise and vibration problems in HVAC system can be mitigated by designing HVAC system properly.
Vibration Management/Application
When designing air-distribution systems to minimize sound transmitted from system components to occupied spaces, there are few pointers that engineers should take into consideration. Based on 2007 ASHRAE Handbook-HVAC Applications, one of the pointers is as followed:
Vibration-isolate all reciprocating and rotating equipment connected to a structure. Also, it is usually necessary to isolate mechanical equipment in basement, directly below a tenant space. It may be necessary to use flexible piping connections and flexible electrical conduit connections for pipes and ducts connected to the equipment.
Fiable Vibration Absorber

Installation
For best result, vibration absorber should be install as close to the compressor as possible along with axis of the compressor’s crankshaft and at the right angle to motion as shown in Figure (1). If vibration occurs at both vertical and horizontal direction, install two units in series at right angle as shown in Figure (2).
Anchor the refrigerant piping at the end of the unit furthest from the vibration source as shown in Figure (1) and (2). Allow sufficient space in the unit so that it will not subject to static compression or tension after brazing it into place. Units should be installed in a straight line as they are not intended to compensate for offset piping.
Vibration absorber are not recommended for use in the suction line where condensation can accumulate. Cover the unit with a waterproof barrier (heat shrinkable PVC tubing or rubber tape) to prevent moisture from freezing under the braid and ferrules, causing the unit to rupture.
